Areca Palms as a Privacy Plant

30.11.15 Comments Posted By R Plants Inc

Thinking of using the Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens) as a solution for your privacy needs? Read on to learn why this plant is an optimal alternative to fencing in your landscape!

Commonly known as the” butterfly palm” or the “feather palm”, these graceful, delicate palms and its fine-textured fronds create a full and dense screening option for any South Florida patio or garden. When spaced properly at planting, Areca Palms fill in a border nicely reaching heights of approximately 15-20 feet. You can maintain the palm to your desired height by removing taller canes of the palm when needed, leaving younger, shorter stems to grow. Areca palms are slow to moderate growers for sun or shade and since they’re wider at the top - sometimes 8 to 10 feet or more in diameter - they allow enough room for the palm to grow a tropical canopy over nearby plants. Not only are they low maintenance, but the cost of installing Areca Palms is reasonable too, due to its fast growth habit.

When utilizing the Areca as a privacy option, it’s advisable not to over trim. Instead, keep the palms manicured or it will considerably thin out, defeating the purpose of proper privacy. Some landscapers find it useful to add Bougainvillea, White Bird of Paradise or Jasmine in between to make it plusher and fuller. Make sure to keep your Arecas pruned and properly watered, as they have a tendency to brown and as with most tropical plants, an occasional misting will make your Areca Palm look and feel healthier.

All in all, the Areca Palm is a South Florida favorite for not only adding a tropical flair to any landscape but also for an appealing, efficient privacy option.
