Asparagus aethiopicus, also known as Asparagus Fern and Foxtail Fern, is a plant native to the Cape Provinces and South Africa and is often used as an ornamental plant. This popular plant is actually not a fern at all, but a member of the Liliaceae family and is considered one of the fastest growing and least demanding of plants. This evergreen is often used to add textural contrast to perennial beds and borders and is an excellent choice for hanging baskets and containers.

Asparagus Ferns produce tiny, pale pink and white flowers in late summer to fall, and will occasionally form red or black berries. From a distance, the plant looks very soft or fluffy due to its fine, needle-like leaves and it also forms beautiful, cloud-like mounds of fine-textured foliage. Asparagus Fern is a very popular house plant that looks great in hanging baskets, window boxes and in floral arrangements.

While Asparagus Ferns will tolerate short periods of drought, they grow best when they are given plenty of water, especially when they are actively growing. They should be planted in rich, light, slightly acidic, well-drained soil and appreciate higher humidity and an occasional misting. Use it in a semi-shady area, along a walkway or under large trees.
