One of our most popular wholesale plants for sale. Taking its name from the Greek goddess Iris, whose footprints sprouted colorful flowers, the Iris is one of the most popular perennials known not only for its beauty, but also for its persistence and sustainability. There are over 300 species in its genus, the most recognizable species being the Bearded Iris and Dutch Iris, which are most commonly used in bouquets and floral arrangements.

This versatile plant blooms in a wide array of colors ranging from snowy white to a deep amethyst and works wonderfully for beautification of gardens, as well as inside the home. The flower’s distinctive characteristic is their three large outer petals called “falls” and three inner upright petals called “standards.” Originally native to Southern Europe, the Iris can now be found widely across North America, flourishing in the north and in more temperate zones.

Along with being aesthetically pleasing, the Iris has also acted as a medicinal remedy throughout history, treating a number of conditions such as dandruff, acne, wounds, asthma, bronchitis, and cough. Additionally, it is an efficient diuretic and tonic, and can also be utilized cosmetically to remove freckles from the skin and to treat numerous skin ailments.

Iris prefers to be planted in locations with a well-drained soil and although it grows best in full sun, this sturdy perennial will also perform well under partial shade. An exorbitant amount of shade will reduce or prevent flowering.  Most commonly planted in the spring, Iris can continue to bloom until late summer and is generally considered to require little routine maintenance. They usually do not demand the use of fertilizers and the use of mulches is highly discouraged.
