Commonly known as Muhly Grass or Pink Hair Grass, Muhlenbergia capillaries is a clump-forming, warm season, perennial grass that is noted for its attractive summer foliage and spectacular clouds of fall flowers. It’s extremely hardy, easy to grow and is recognized for its pinkish-purple hues which float above the body of the plant. Perfect in borders, meadows, and native gardens, Muhly requires little maintenance or upkeep.

In late summer or fall, a mist of pink flowers blankets the tips of the blades, bringing the plant up 2 feet more. After flowering for several weeks, the grass' resulting seeds tan the grass before self-sowing and during the summer, the leaves will stay green but soon morph during the fall to produce a more copper color.

Naturally found along highways, in flat forests and along coastal dunes – make sure to plant your muhly grass in a well-drained soil. Plant several together but for an eye-popping effect, space at least 2 feet apart. These plants love good light so the brighter and sunnier the space, the better., Muhly is drought tolerant once established but will grow fuller and thrive more with irrigation.
