Details

Dracaena reflexa, commonly called Song of India, is a species of Dracaena which is native to Madagascar and other nearby islands of the Indian Ocean. It is widely grown as an ornamental plant and houseplant, valued for its richly colored, evergreen leaves, and thick, irregular stems. It can be also be grown as a small bush, or a tree reaching over 30 feet in height. Song of India is a fairly low maintenance plant but does require a bit more attention than some of the other Dracaena.

The leaves are the main attraction to this species - although it does bloom clusters of white small flowers that are not very alluring or noticeable. Song of India leaves are glossy and grow up to 1ft long and a couple of inches or so wide. There are various cultivars of this plant that display different leaf variations, although the most popular is the yellow edged variegata type.

Care for Song of India is quite easy. It thrives in average room conditions, even tolerating dry indoor air and will survive in low light; however, you'll get optimum leaf color and growth by keeping it in bright light year-round. Always use a loose quick draining soil as this helps prevent overwatering and root rot.
